Our Choice of leather- Vegetable tanned leather

Our number one choice of leather among several other types of leather  is vegetable tanned leather. The first time I head of the word vegetable tanned leather I immediately thought it was leather made from vegetables 😊, well, it is not, it is in fact animal skin.

WHAT IS VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER?

Vegetable tanned leather refers to the tannage, or method of tanning the cowhide into leather. It’s called “vegetable” because of the natural materials used in the tanning process like tree bark. Vegetable tanning or veg tan as it’s sometimes called, is one of the oldest methods of tanning known. It has been around for centuries. It takes up to 6 weeks to complete the veg tan process.. While the names may sound similar, vegetable-tanned leather is not to be confused with vegan leather, which is not a real leather product at all.

Why do we love veg tan leather?

Besides the fact that it is made naturally and not overly processed, the products we make are happily ever after products, made from the most premium part of the leather,  and will age gracefully over time, forming a unique patina that adds character and personality to every piece. The bags and accessories gain more character and are more beautiful with age, the more you use it the more beautiful they become. What can be better than that. As any noble woods, you may be able to appreciate natural marks from time to time that shall not be deemed as defects but as a statement of natural quality.

Unlike the mass produced chrome leathers, vegetable tanned leathers are kinder to the environment than the normal chrome leathers and are also non-toxic for personal use.  This is why at NaniTa our main material is the full-grain vegetable tanned leathers, because they’re better, they will last you longer, they’re kinder to the environment, and non-toxic for your personal use.

Our team of experienced craftsman and women with over 15 years experience work on each wearable by hand. The hides are hand painted/ dyed with water-based dyes that are not harmful to the environment before hand-stitching.

Vegetable tanned leather has that classic leather smell that is absolutely addictive you’ll know it when you smell it.
